Options for Carrying Two Bikes With 2014 BMW 550 GT
Question:
I have a BMW 550 GT. This is a hatchback NOT a sedan. Do you have anything other then roof rack mounts? I will be for 2 bikes. Thanks

We have determined that there are some trunk mount racks that are compatible with your vehicle. I'd recommend the Thule OutWay # TH45JV. The OutWay uses only 2 rubber coated straps to attach to the vehicle, instead of the 6 strap and buckle arrangement used by other racks. The rack locks to the vehicle, and the rack features an integrated cable lock to lock the bikes to the carrier to help deter theft. This is without a doubt the easiest to use and most convenient trunk mounted bike rack I've ever used.
There is a hitch available for the 2014 BMW 550, but Curt has not been able to determine if there's anything different with the GT model that would prevent the hitch from being installed. Typically higher performance models of a given vehicle will have different exhaust systems or different aero treatments of the fascia under the rear bumper, either of which could interfere with the installation of a hitch.
To minimize the risk of scratching the vehicle, before installing a trunk mounted rack ensure that the surface of the vehicle and of the rack that will touch each other are perfectly clean and free of grit. A good coat of quality car wax on the deck lid of the vehicle can provide additional protection. Be sure to exactly follow the installation and adjustment instructions and make sure the rack isn't overloaded beyond its 70 lb weight capacity.
If you'll be transporting women's bikes or bikes with sharply-angled top tubes, you might also consider a frame adapter bar like part # 64005. The bar spans the distance between the handlebar gooseneck and the seat post, which provides a secondary attachment point for the bike rack. This allows the bike to be carried level, which maximizes ground clearance.
