Can Bike Be Loaded On Saris Freedom 2 Platform Bike Rack With Upright Mast Lowered

Question:

Can you lower the mast, then lift a bike into the wheel cups, then raise and pin the mast and complete the frame grips, etc? It would be hard for me to lift my 27lb bike over the upright mast or from the side like in the demo video.

I went to the shop and spoke with the installers about the Saris Freedom 2 Bike Platform Rack, part # SA4412B. As you stated, the installer in the video just places the bike on the carrier from the side.

He also said that when he is placing a bike on lower vehicles, he lifts the bike over the upright mast and slips it into the cradle. He told me that is the easiest way for him to put a bike on the carrier. I asked about loading a bike with the mast in the down position, and he said it could be done, but when you go to raise the mast back up it may interfere with the bike wheel, frame, or pedals, which can be a bit cumbersome as well. If you wished to install the bike that way, you may need to tile the bike toward the back of the vehicle while raising the mast back up.

The upright mast is designed to be lowered when the bikes are unloaded so that you can gain access to the rear cargo area of the vehicle.
