Primary Difference Between Round Bar and Trunnion Weight Distribution Systems

Question:

I am comparing 2 weight distribution hitches one with the Trunnion bars and one with the round bars. All things being equal for weight the same weight capacity for the bars what would be the best hitch. Thanks

Generally speaking, trunnion bar systems are available in higher weight ratings, but if you're speaking of two systems with identical weight ratings, the main difference between the two is that the trunnion bar system allows for better ground clearance. So, if you were driving a minivan or smaller SUV that has limited ground clearance at the rear, the trunnion bar system would be the way to go. If you drive a larger SUV or a truck, you could go either way.

To choose a weight distribution system, you'll need to first determine the fully loaded and ready to tow tongue weight of your trailer. To that figure, add the weight of any gear stowed in the cargo area of the SUV or truck bed behind the rear axle. I've linked to an FAQ article that explains how to do this. These combined figures comprise the Total Tongue Weight (TTW) of your set-up. The TTW of your trailer should fall as close as possible to the middle of the effective range of the weight distribution system you choose.

If you'd care to reply with the year, make and model of your vehicle and the fully loaded and ready to tow tongue weight of your trailer, plus the weight of anything you typically carry behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle, I'd be happy to make a specific recommendation.
