Why are Weight Distribution Systems not to be Used on a 2000 Toyota 4Runner

Question:

Why does the owners manual for the 2000 4Runner advise against a weight distribution hitch? Thanks

Expert Reply:

When a vehicle manufacturer specifies that vehicle should not be used with a weight distribution system, it means that the frame of the vehicle cannot handle the stress of a weight distribution system and could result in severe vehicle damage. The vehicle frame could bend or buckle or the hitch could rip out of the vehicle frame.

A weight distribution system transfers some of the tongue weight, the vertical load on the ball, further up the vehicle frame. Some frames cannot support the load, like in this case.
