Comparing Reese Strait-Line Weight Distribution System # RP66074 and # RP66084

Question:

Is the only difference between #66074 and #66084 the shank? If not what else is different? I have a 2011 F-150 and Ill be towing a trailer thats going to be around 7500# - #8,000# fully loaded. Dont know the tongue weight but im guessing something around 1000#. Am I looking at the right product? If so, which one should i buy?

They are both the same Strait-Line system, rated for trailers with tongue weights ranging from 600-1200 lbs. The only difference between the # RP66074 and the # RP66084 is that the 66084 includes the weight distributing shank.

To choose a weight distribution system, I highly recommend you first determine the fully loaded and ready to tow tongue weight of your trailer. To that figure, add the weight of any gear stowed in the cargo area of the SUV or truck bed behind the rear axle. I've linked to an FAQ article that explains how to do this. These combined figures comprise the Total Tongue Weight (TTW) of your set-up. Ideally, the TTW of your trailer should fall as close as possible to the middle of the effective range of the weight distribution system you choose.

So, if the TTW of your trailer is less than 1200 lbs, and you don't figure to ever have more TTW than that figure, then the RP66074 or RP66084 would work great for you. However, if your TTW is above 1200 lbs, you'd need to step up to a system with a 1500 lb tongue weight capacity like # RP66130, which does NOT include the weight distributing shank.

The weight distribution systems need a trailer ball with a threaded shank measuring 1-1/4 inches in diameter, like part # 19286.
