Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 2012 Fiat 500 Behind a Motor Home

Question:

I have noticed that across the internet there are several variants of the BX2801 baseplate being pictured. Some are CLEARLY not Blue Ox not even painted!. So I called Blue Ox and they sent me the actual spec/install sheet for the BX2801. Their BX2801 has removable attachment tabs, 18inch on center. Based on the description and picture, yours has fixed attachment tabs, 20inch on center. Please explain this discrepancy wrong picture? cut-n-paste oops? Whatever I order and receive, it must EXACTLY MATCH the manufacturers literature, or the difference be explained by the manufacturer. Thanks!

I went out to the warehouse and opened up a box of the Blue Ox base plates # BX2801. They do indeed have removable tabs! We are going to take new pictures to show all the parts including the tabs.

In addition to the base plates you will also need a compatible tow bar. I recommend the Alpha # BX7380. It is rated for up to 6,500 pounds and includes safety cables. I have linked a review video for you.

For lighting you can use a magnetic kit such as # RM-2120 or for a more permanent solution you can use diode kit # 154-792-118158.

And finally, most states now require supplemental braking on the vehicle being flat towed. One of the easiest systems to set up and use is the Even Brake proportional system # RM-9400. It will apply the Fiat brakes in proportion to how much the tow vehicle is braking. This is the easiest way to stop and it reduces wear and tear on both vehicles.

You will also need stop light switch kit # RM-751455 and 12 volt outlet kit # RM-9332 for the braking system to work properly.

Be sure to consult your Fiat owners manual for specific information on flat towing the vehicle. I have also included some helpful links to our series of help articles on flat towing for you.
