What Is Needed To Choose the Correct Weight Distribution System

Question:

I want to purchase a weight distribution system that prevents sway. I would also like to be able to back up without removing it. I want a high quality item, that functions very well. My vehicle is a 2012 King Ranch Expedition, extended length. I have a tow package. GVW is 6000 pounds, empty. Carrying capacity is 1000 pounds. I am going to pull a 2014 Atlas 7x14foot enclosed cargo trailer with a wedge nose and torsion axles. It is 7foot tall. The trailer weighs 2700 pounds, empty. I think the tongue weight is around 400 pounds, but Im not sure. My ball is 2 5/16. I plan to put household items, like plastic tubs of clothes, a couch, smile dining table, king size bed, etc. in it. What would you recommend to prevent sway and help me fend off side winds? I would like to be able to back up, without removing the unit, if possible.

In order to find the right weight distribution system for you, there are two important things you will need to know. The tongue weight and the gross trailer weight of the trailer when it is in its fully-loaded-ready-to-tow condition. Choosing the right sized system is important. If you choose bars that are rated too high, you will experience a rigid ride, and if you choose a system that is rated too low, it will not work at all.

To determine the tongue weight you need to take the tongue weight of the trailer when it is fully loaded and add that weight to the weight of any cargo you are placing behind the rear axle of your towing vehicle. I have attached a helpful article that explains weight distribution and sway-control.
