Kayak/Canoe Carrying Options for 2009 Honda Pilot with Naked Roof
Question:
I am looking for sturdy and inexpensive options to carry a canoe or kayak on my Pilot. I currently have a naked roof and like the idea of using by 2inch hitch for the extension bar in the rear and simply using the strapped bar across the roof with a 2nd foam block.

Vehicles with a naked roof like your 2009 Honda Pilot can be equipped for transporting a canoe or kayak in several ways, one of which is the Rhino-Rack T-Load Hitch Mounted Load Assist # RTL002. The main advantages of this item are that it includes everything you need (hitch-mount load bar, roof cross bar) and that it allows for a good part of the canoe's or kayak's weight to be borne by the hitch-mounted load extender rather than the Pilot's roof. You also then have the additional utility of using this system to transport other items such as lumber.
Another way to go that is also the most cost-effective option is just to use a foam block carrier on its own, such as the Rightline GearKayak Carrier # RL100K10 or one of the similar items shown on the link provided. If your Pilot owner's manual indicates that it has the capacity to handle the full weight of your kayak or canoe, then this option may appeal to you.
