Brake Controller Recommendation for a 2006 Ford F-150 XLT with 6-Way Trailer Connector

Question:

Hello, I am looking for a proportional brake controller for my 2006 F150 XLT. I am not sure what the original wiring was for trailers. I currently have a small 6 round pin plug installed. I will be towing a JayFlight G2 23fb that has a large 7 pin plug. I have the adapter I need to plug into my truck. Can you make any suggestions as to what brake controller I will need? There is a plug-in available under my steering column. Thank You

Brake controllers are not a vehicle or trailer specific item, so you can use any brake controller on the market. The brake controller I use in my truck is the Tekonsha Prodigy P2, # 90885, but I'll tell you I am thinking about upgrading to the Prodigy P3, # 90195. The P2 is a great controller and I have had zero problems. It is also one of the most popular controllers on the market. The P3 comes with a few more features and a customizable display that makes setup and troubleshooting much easier. I have attached a link to all of our brake controllers for you to check out. Let me know if you have any questions on other controllers. I have also attached a brake controller installation video on a Ford F-150 that shows how to install the controller on your truck.

There is a brake controller port under the dash on your 2006 Ford F-150 XLT. If you choose a Tekonsha or Draw-Tite brake controller, then you will want the Brake Controller Plug-In Wiring Adapter, # 3035-P. If you choose a different brand, let me know and I can recommend the correct harness.

As long as the 6-pin trailer connector on your truck is wired into the factory trailer wiring, then you should have no problem as long as you have the correct adapter. There are 2 ways that 6-pin connectors are wired, so if you plug in your adapter and the trailer brakes are locked up, then you will want to switch the center pin and the 2 o'clock pin on the 6-pin side of your adapter.

If it were my truck I would replace the 6-way connector with a 7-way connector because it is more common. If the connector is OEM, then there should be a round plug that is plugged into the back of the 6-pin connector. If this is the case on your truck, you can just replace the 6-way connector with our Pollack 7- and 4-Pole Connector, # HM40975. If the 6-pin connector cannot be unplugged, then you could just cut the wires and splice a pigtail like part # PK11998 and use the Pollack 7- and 4-Way Connector, # HM40975.
