Boat Trailer Running Lights Do Not Work with 2014 Chevy Silverado but Did Work with 2008 Ford F-150

Question:

I had a 2008 F-150 and my lights on my boat trailer worked. Now, I have a 2014 Chevy Silverado, and the brake lights and turn signal lights work, but I do not have running lights. I have used the same pin/adapter, and have even replaced the adapter to see if that would help? Has anyone else had this issue?

You mentioned an adapter, but I am not sure what type of adapter or what type of connector is on the trailer. I would think the 2014 Chevy Silverado has a factory installed 7-Way trailer connector. The boat trailer would then have a 4- or 5-Way flat connector. So, you would be using an adapter such as # 37385.

To determine where the problem is, disconnect the trailer and adapter from the Chevy. Then use a circuit tester such as # PTW2993 to test the pin in the 11 oclock position with the running lights turned on. If there is no power on that pin, then you will need to check the fuses related to the tow package wiring using the owner's manual to find them.

If there is power on that pin, then plug in your adapter and test the output pins on it. If there is no power on the running light circuit on the output side, then the adapter is the problem. If there is power, then the issue is on the trailer.

On the trailer it is likely a bad ground. Ground problems normally show up when there is more draw on a system such as when you have the running lights on and then use another function like a turn signal or brake light.

Make sure that the vehicle side and trailer side connectors are clean and free of corrosion inside and out. The main connector grounds should be attached to clean and corrosion free bare metal surfaces.

The light grounds should also be attached to clean and corrosion free bare metal surfaces. If there is anything between a light ground and the metal trailer frame or if the trailer has an aluminum frame, tilt bed, or folding tongue, any of these things can interrupt the ground. Running jumper wires from the light grounds to the main trailer connector ground can help.
