Weight Distribution With Sway Control Recommendation For 27 Ft Airstream Travel Trailer

Question:

I just purchased a 2014 Flying Cloud Airstream 27ft with tongue weight of 791 pounds dry...no idea what it will be loaded... and a GVWR of 7600 pounds. My tow vehicle is a 2013 Toyota Tundra with a GVWR of 7100 pounds. I have multiple suggestions and conflicting info surrounding a WD with anti-sway devices. The most recent recommendation is the Reese unit # 66153 but the tongue weight is at 800 pounds which seems too low based on what I have read on your site. Can you assist with the correct reese device?

Since one of the biggest factors to consider when looking for weight distribution is the tongue weight, you want to know what the tongue weight is when the trailer is fully loaded and ready-to-tow. You add that weight to the weight of any cargo you place behind the rear axle of the towing vehicle and that gives you the tongue weight you need to know when choosing a system. I have attached a helpful article about weight distribution you can check out.

I have also attached a help article that explains how to determine tongue weight you can take a look at.

When selecting a weight distribution system you want to choose a system that has a tongue weight range so that your tongue weight falls somewhere near the middle.

Based on the numbers you have given, you may want to take a look at the Reese Steadi-Flex Weight Distribution w Sway Control, part # RP66560. This system has a gross towing weight of 12,000 lbs and a tongue weight range between 600 to 1,200 lbs.
