How to Pick Out Weight Distribution System Spring Bars Based on Tongue Weight

Question:

My dry tongue weight on my travel trailer is about 900lbs. Trailer dry weight is 6030lbs. I have a Reese round bar head that says its rated for 14,000lb trailer weight and the shank says its rated at 1,000/1,400lbs hitch weight. Wondering which weight distribution bars I should go with 1000lbs or 1200lbs?

The best way to pick out a weight distribution spring bars is to base it off of the loaded tongue weight of the setup when it is loaded and ready to tow, this figure also includes the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. I attached an FAQ on determining tongue weight for you to check out as well.

It's hard to say for certain if your 1,000 lb spring bars would work, but if your loaded tongue weight didn't exceed 1,000 lbs they would work. If you determine that your tongue does exceed this figure then you will need higher rated bars like the part # 58338.
