For your 2012 Nissan Xterra, I recommend a kayak carrier like the Thule Stacker Kayak Carrier System, part # TH830. This is a post-style carrier that holds up to 2 kayaks. This carrier comes with heavy duty straps to secure the kayaks to the carrier and also ratcheting tie-down straps for the bow and stern to secure the kayak to your vehicle.
To be able to reach the top of you vehicle easier I recommend the HitchMate TireStep Adjustable Step, part # HE4040. This tire step slips over the tire and can be adjusted for a good fit and has a weight capacity of 400 lbs. It folds flat for easy storage when not in use.
