If you are looking for a 2-bike carrier for your 2005 Volkswagen Passat Wagon, I recommend the Thule Gateway 2 Bike Carrier, part # TH88VR. This carrier holds bike frames at 3 points to prevent sway and bike-to-bike contact, and uses 6 nylon straps to secure the carrier to your Passat.
If you are looking for a 3-bike option, I recommend the Thule OutWay 3-Bike Rack # TH56BV.
When trunk-mounted carriers are installed the rear windshield wiper cannot be used.
If you are carrying bikes with alternative frames like kids bikes or women's bikes, I recommend an adapter bar like part # 64005. This bar attaches between the seat post and the handlebar stem and allows the bike to ride more level while providing more ground clearance.
