Expert Reply:

Trailer configurations and loading, road and weather conditions, towing speed, tire condition and pressure, and center of gravity of trailer all affect towing and the degree of sway experienced. To get maximum benefits from the sway control, a series of road tests should be taken with the loaded trailer. On subsequent trips increase or decrease tension by turning the adjusting bolt in 1/4 turn increments in the direction shown on the label.

It's very important that the tension be removed when operating on slick or icy pavement. You'll also need to remove the sway control when backing the trailer, as jackknifing the trailer will damage the sway control.

Having the trailer level while towing and proper weight distribution of the load will also reduce trailer sway. Use a ball mount with the proper rise/drop so that the trailer tows level. Try moving more cargo in the trailer forward of the axle to reduce sway.
