will the TH910XT fit a 2014 Buick Encore? I was told a rear rack would not fit this car.

The Thule Passage Trunk Mounted Bike Rack part # TH910XT is a confirmed fit for your 2014 Buick Encore.
Based on my research, it looks like your Encore may have a top rear spoiler. Some trunk mounted bike racks are not designed to fit vehicles with these spoilers. However my contact at Thule stated that if the spoiler is not attached to the gate, but attached to the portion of the vehicle above the gate, then you will be able to use the Thule Passage # TH910XT.
Another option is the Hollywood Racks Trunk Bike Rack part # HRF2, which is a confirmed fit for your Encore and is specifically designed for vehicle's with rear spoilers.

If you will be carrying any women's or children's bikes that do not have the horizontal bar on the frame, then I recommend the Swagman Bike Adapter Bar, # 64005. This part will give you the horizontal bar that is needed to transport the bikes level on a bike rack.
