Factory Brake Controller on a 2008 Chevy Silverado 3500 Doesn't Register Trailer Brake Connection

Question:

I have a 2008 Chevy Silverado 3500 with an integrated brake controller. I know the brake controller works because I have 2 trailers that I regularly pull that work just fine with it. I have another trailer that I pull periodically that the DIC does not indicate a connection with the braking system. This other trailer seems to work fine for a other people who tow it with a Dodge 3500 and a Ford F150. Im not sure where to go on this.

If the problem trailer uses electric over hydraulic trailer brakes, that could be the problem. Many factory integrated controllers do not work with EOH braking systems and there will either need to be an adapter installed (and it depends on the brand of the actuator) or an aftermarket controller that is compatible will have to be installed such as the P2 # 90885 or P3 # 90195.

If the trailer just has regular electric brakes then the likely issue is a dirty or corroded trailer connector on the vehicle or trailer or a wiring issue on the trailer.

Many times, dirt or corrosion can cause a short or connection problem in a trailer connector. Make sure the truck and the trailer side connectors are clean and free of corrosion inside and out.

If the truck side checks out fine then it could be the wiring to the brake magnets or the magnets themselves. Inspect the power wires to the magnets and look for pinched, frayed, or damaged wires and fix as needed. Make sure the ground wires are attached to clean and corrosion free bare metal surfaces.

You can visually inspect the magnets and if you can see the copper windings coming through the magnets will need to be replaced. To further test the magnets you can follow the help article I have linked.
