Four Bike Platform Style Bike Rack for a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Question:

I have a 2012 Jeep with the need for a sturdy rack for 4 bikes. I like the 2+2 concept but it is not a requirement as 4 will work as well. I must have a frame mount not wheel mount with 2inch hitch. Main question is to your have an aluminum rack versus a steel rack?

Aluminum racks are gong to weigh less and are not susceptible to corrosion like steel. They do tend to cost more but make for a good investment.

Steel racks are heavy and can suffer from corrosion if not taken care of. They tend to cost less and are very strong.

But for platform racks all of the aluminum racks hold the bikes at the wheels and not the frame so that will not work for you. The Swagman Quad, # S64FR, is a good option. It can be either a 2 or 4 bike rack. And it holds the bikes at the frames like you want.

Another option you might like is the Saris Freedom, # SA4414B. This is a 4-bike rack, it cannot be transformed to a 2-bike rack like the Quad. It does hold the bikes at the frame. It is more than 30 pounds lighter than the Quad so a great option if weight is an issue. I have linked a video review of this rack as well.
