Parts Needed to Install a 7-Way Trailer Connector and Brake Controller on a 2002 Ford F-150

Question:

How can I be sure I have the tow package wiring already installed in my truck. There is a receptacle for the brake controller under the dash and I have a 4 pin at the rear. I want to instal the 7 pin oem harness for the use of electric brakes on my horse trailer. I take the presence of the jack under the dash to mean the harness is already installed. Is this a correct assumption? Looking at harness 118242 and bracket 18138.

If the 4-Way connector on your 2002 Ford F-150 is a factory harness then it may say Ford on it. Otherwise if you have a dealer look up the VIN they can usually tell you how the truck was originally equipped.

If it is a factory 4-Way then you would need 7-way harness # 118242.

All of the 2002 Ford F-150s, whether they came with 4-Way, 7-Way, or no trailer connector at all, had that brake controller port under the dash so it is not an indication of whether or not the truck had a factory tow package.

If the 4-Way is not factory installed then you would need to use # ETBC7 to add a 7-Way and do a little hardwiring. I have included a link to a helpful article that explains the different ways in which you could install a brake controller on your truck.

For a brake controller I recommend the P2, # 90885, because it is easy to set up and use and it is reliable. The proper harness is # 3035-P
