How to Identify Capacity of Unknown Trailer Axle
Question:
Trying to replace my surge trailer brakes. How do I know what weight rating my boat trailer axles are? Id like to replace the backing plates with all components. I think they are 7000 lb. Only one axle has brakes. Need the galvanized ones. Thanks.

Determining the rating of an axle can be a bit of a guessing game. First, check the trailer frame for a VIN plate, which might include the capacity of the trailer. Examine the axle tube, sometimes there's a tag or stamping on the axle listing its capacity. If you don't find anything there, I'll need you to assemble some information for me.
What's the diameter of the axle tube?
What's the wheel bolt pattern?
What's the inside diameter and depth of the brake drums?
What are the reference numbers from the inner and outer wheel bearings?
How many bolts hold the brake assemblies onto the brake flange on the axle?
The more clues and pieces of the puzzle you can provide, the better the luck we'll have identifying your axle capacity and giving you suggestions for parts you need to get you surge actuated drum brakes back in action.
