Trailer Rocks Back and Forth and Rocks 1994 Chevy Caprice Station Wagon

Question:

I am using a chevy Caprice wagon 1994 to tow a 17 foot trailer that weighs about 2500 pounds and has about 200 pounds of toung weight. The car has the 350 engine and is rated to to 5000 pounds, HOWEVER, the trailer is balanced with the double axel right in the middle, and it is like a teeter totter and really rocks the car can make you sea sick. My hitch is the 1 1/4 3500 pound class, I need to stop this rocking like a teeter totter - the parts you mentioned in the previous post were said to help with sway but not rocking - I have little to no sway with just the hitch, but the rocking is awful Thanks for the help

It sounds like the trailer either does not have enough tongue weight and/or it is not level when towed. If you can move some weight further towards the front of the trailer that will help with the rocking sensation.

To tow the trailer level you need a ball mount with the right rise or drop. On a Class II trailer hitch though you are supposed to use the ball mount recommended by the hitch manufacturer. I have included a link to a help article that shows how to measure to choose a ball mount with the correct rise or drop to tow the trailer level. I have also linked our ball mount main page.

You can also add some suspension enhancement to your 1994 Chevy Caprice Wagon using Air Lift air springs # AL60755. These springs are going to absorb a lot of that rocking so it won't be felt in the vehicle nearly as much.

If you address the tongue weight, level towing, and stiffen up the rear suspension it will take care of the problem.
