Brake Controller Only Works with Manual Override, Not Brake Pedal, on a 2011 GMC Yukon XL

Question:

We have installed Hopkins 47294. The brake lights and turn signals all work. However, the brakes only actuate with the manual override, not when pressing the brake pedal. How do we fix this? Thank you.

The first thing you will want to check on your 2011 GMC Yukon XL is the stop light or CHMSL fuse. a blown fuse could be causing this issue.

If the fuse is good then the likely culprit is the brake controller red wire. That is the wire that receives the signal that you are stepping on the brake pedal.

On a 2011 GMC Yukon XL the brake controller red wire should be attached to the tow package light blue/white wire. I have linked a video that should help. It is on a newer Yukon XL but the wire colors and connections will be the same.

You will also want to make sure the power output level on the controller is set high enough and that it is not mounted outside of the range specified in the instructions. Also make sure it is not tilted or turned to one side.
