How to Figure Out if Thule Hyper XL Cargo Box Interferes with Rear Hatch on 2012 Mazda 5

Question:

Hi, I am looking to purchase a Thule rack and cargo box for my 2012 Mazda5. Will this cargo box interfere with the rear hatch clearance on my vehicle? I cant tell from the fit guide on the Thule website, since I do not yet have the rack itself installed obviously. Am looking at the 7601/7602/3080 combo for the base rack. Thank you.

First, the Thule AeroBlade Edge roof rack, # TH7601-TH7602 with fit kit # THKIT3080, is an excellent choice. To determine if there will be any interference with the hatch on your 2012 Mazda 5, you will need to take one measurement.

The rack installs on fixed points on your vehicle roof, see video link. Measure from the center point of one of the front fixed mounting points straight back to the seam between the roof and the hatch. If that measurement is at least 47-1/2 inches then the Thule Motion XT cargo box, # TH629706, will fit without hatch interference.

If you come up with a lower measurement, let me know what it is and I can tell you which Thule boxes will fit without hatch interference. I have included a picture showing where the measurement is taken. I have also linked a video review of the cargo box for you.
