Hitch-Mount Platform-Style Bike Rack Recommendation for 2013 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited

Question:

I own a 2013 Jeep Wrangler unlimited. Im trying to find a hitch mounted tray style bike rack, two to four bike capacity. I would especially like to open the tailgate without removing the rack. Is there a product that will allow this?

First you will want to check the size and tongue weight capacity of the hitch on your Wrangler Unlimited since it could be equipped with either a 1-1/4-inch Class II hitch or a 2-inch Class III hitch. There will be a sticker on the hitch indicating its tongue weight rating (the downward force on the hitch) and this rating must be enough for the weight of the bike carrier you select plus the weight of all of your loaded bikes. The linked article will help explain hitch capacity.

Clearance at the back of the vehicle is an important consideration and the linked article on hitch racks will show you how to measure to determine how much clearance your rack needs in order to properly fit at the rear of your Wrangler.

If you have a 1-1/4-inch Class II hitch you can use one of the links provided to see compatible Class II platform-style bike racks. You will be limited to carriers with no more than a 3-bike capacity.

If you have a 2-inch Class III hitch you can use the other link to see 4-bike Class III tilting platform carriers that will fit that size receiver. For example, the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE # HR1400Z offers a tilting mast to provide vehicle access.
