The first thing you need to do is use a circuit tester like part # 3808, and test the 4-way connector on the rear of your 2004 Kia Sorento.
If the 4-way has the functions working properly, you then need to connect the 4-way to the new 4-way and 7-way adapter. Then use the circuit tester to check the 4-way that is on the adapter. Make certain your ground wire is securely fastened to a clean metal surface on your Sorento. If you do not have a good ground secured, it can cause many issues.
If the 4-way on the adapter is working properly you then need to test the pins in the 7-way on the adapter. You will still get the same functions as you would for the 4-way connector.
If all the connections are working properly but the trailer lights are still not functioning, you may have a problem with the wiring on the trailer, either a loose ground wire or corrosion in the connector, or broken wires on the trailer.
I have attached a link to a helpful article that explains how to troubleshoot 4-way and 5-way wiring connections.
I recommend using dielectric grease like part # 11755. This prevents dust and moisture from getting into the electrical connections.
