Can I Use 5/8" Pins Instead Of Bolts For The Demco Trailer Coupler DM14040-81
Question:
Hi, I am wondering if I can use pins with this Demco coupler on my trailer instead of using bolts with nylock nuts. The reason being is that when Im not using the trailer I prefer to take the coupler completely off to help prevent theft. I have a BandW hitch and several spare 5/8 pins for it. My question is do I really need to bolt the coupler on or could I use those BandW pins? I pull around 10k the hitch is rated for more than that so Im assuming the pins are as well. Im just curious if there is a rule or reason that people always bolt adjustable couplers on. Thanks.

Hello Lee, that is a good question. We do not recommend using 5/8" pins to hold the Demco # DM14040-81 coupler into the channel. The manufacturer specifies that grade 5 mounting bolts must be used in order to achieve the full 21,000 lb weight capacity. Using pins instead of bolts will reduce the weight rating to an unknown amount, and you will risk equipment failure. Even though you will only be towing around 10K I cannot in good conscience recommend using pins instead of bolts.
For added security, I suggest using a coupler lock, like the Fastway # FA86-0015-306.
