Alternator Battery Draining
Question:
I have an Itasca Spirit 31K and towing a 2022 Equinox. The base plate for the Equinox was installed by Etrailer in Wentzville. The setup worked without any problems for two years . Never had a dead Equinox battery. On our last trip to New Hampshire we had a problem with the alternator of the MH. Out of the blue the system died no Lights on the dash and fortunately we came to a stop in safe place. My question for you guys is why was the battery of the Equinox depleted and why were the house batteries depleted as well as the MH engine battery. A faulty alternator was the culprit. Please explain the draining of all batteries. Thank you for your response.

Hello Frans, from my understanding of how vehicle engineering works, if an alternator goes bad then the batteries will drain quickly because it can't properly maintain the voltage charge as it's supposed to manage it.

Thanks for responding for the generic answer. My question was why was the battery of my tow car depleted. I assume there should be a diode installed in the charge line to the Equinox to prevent this from happening. The same scenario should have been for the house batteries killing the operation of the fridge. Looking forward to your comments. FRans
