Converting A Toy Hauler With 8K Axles Over To Disc Brakes

Question:

Hello, Id like some assistance in ing the correct brakes for my Toy Hauler. The axles are 8k Lippert but appear to have 7k assemblies. Here is the information on the axle: LCI80H-SBSA-92.5-74.5-NOSP-OS-O-865H-9/16-7279-18T I am thinking about going with a Dexter setup or possibly converting to Disc. I am also concerned with these brake assemblies being rated for less than the axle. Is it possible to upgrade to an 8K assembly? What options would I have to convert to a Disc setup? Thanks, Mike

Hello Mike. Generally, the 8K axles will use the 12-1/4" diameter x 3-3/8" wide brake shoes. The 7K shoes will be 12" x 2". If your toy hauler is equipped with the 12" x 2" brakes, they technically are under-rated for the axle. Depending on your GVWR this is not necessarily a huge concern.

It is possible to convert an 8K axle to disc brakes. Disc brakes provide more effective braking, and they are much more durable and weather resistant.

In order to convert your RV to disc brakes, you will need a disc brake kit, a brake line kit, an electric over hydraulic actuator and a breakaway kit. You will also need an electric trailer brake controller for your tow vehicle, such as the Tekonsha P3 # 90195. Here is what I recommend for your conversion:

- Kodiak Disc Brake Kit - 13" Hub/Rotor - 8 on 6-1/2 - Dacromet - 8,000-lb Dexter # K2HR89DD

- Inner Bearing item # 25580

- Outer Bearing item # 02475

- Grease Seal item # RG06-070

- Hydrastar Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator Kit for Disc Brakes - 1,600 psi # HBA16-252-82

Keep in mind the brake kits are sold per axle, and each one will need its own bearings and seals since they are sold separately. The Hydrastar kit comes with everything else you will need; actuator, brake lines and breakaway. It comes with a 25' main line, so please do make sure this will be long enough for your camper. You will find a link below to our guide on converting to disc brakes, and it goes over all of this in detail. Feel free to reach out to me if you have further questions.
