How To Determine How Much Rise Or Drop I Need For A Ball Mount?

Question:

I want to order a ball mount and ball, to be torqued by you. How do I tell you whether I want the rise or ? In my case, I want to use the mount with a 2inch rise. Thanks.

Hey Darrell, thanks for reaching out. The amount of rise or drop for the ball mount will depend on two things. The height of the hitch on your truck, and the height of the coupler on your trailer. We want the trailer to be level when you are towing, or as close to level as possible.

What you can do is park your truck on level ground, and measure from the upper inside edge of your hitch receiver to the ground. Then you can, with the trailer leveled, measure from the center of the ball coupler to the ground. The difference between these two measurements will tell you the approximate amount of rise/drop you will need.

The Curt Class III Ball Mount # C45056 has a 2" drop which is pretty common for a lot of truck and trailer combos.

I see that you ordered our etrailer Pre-Torqued Ball Mount # e38NR which is an even better choice in my opinion. It has a bit more rise (2-3/4") than other option and the black nickel coating on the ball is not only extremely durable, but it looks pretty cool too.
