Are 3,500 lb Axles Okay to Use on an Enclosed Car Trailer
Question:
I am thinking about upgrading the axels on my 24 foot enclosed car trailer. I have been reading that is not wise to tow a car long distance in a trailer with 3500 lb axels so I wanted to see what would be the best option and make the most since. I am towing a 72 Nova but that is it. my longest trip is about 3 1/2 hours one way twice a year while all other trips are around 2 hours or less an only one a month or so. Do I need bigger axels? Is it safer? The trailer is about 9 years old and I have not used it much until this year. Any advice you could give would be great.

Hey Wade, thanks for reaching out!
The 3,500 lb axles on your trailer are just fine as long as your fully loaded trailer isn't exceeding 7,000 lbs. Your '72 Nova should only weigh in at about 3,000 lbs which leaves plenty of room for the weight of your trailer along with any supplies or other cargo you need to transport.
As long as everything is rated properly and you are maintaining your trailer parts (see attached link for our maintenance checklist) you should be good to go!
