Best Way To Test Trailer Side 7-Way Without A 7-Way On Tow Vehicle

Question:

Hello, I have a 1974 apache pop up trailer and I am currently trying to retrofit the original trailer plug harness from the rectangular 6 way plug it came with to a modern 7 way plug. I have all my wiring connected per the diagrams that I have but Im not sure how to test if everything is working as it should. My tow vehicle does not have a tow hitch or wiring installed yet, thats next on the list but I wanted to make sure my trailer wiring was 100 done before moving on. The tools I have for testing are a multimeter, test lights, 12v jumper pack, and various wire connectors. I tried testing for continuity and I get continuity between the 12v accessory and ground, and I get continuity between the turn signal/brake pins but Im not sure how to apply power and see the lights turn on. Thanks for any advice!

Hello Dylan. Without having a vehicle to connect to, the only way to properly test your trailers 7-way is to use a tester like the Tekonsha # 8010 or the Hopkins Tow Doctor # HM50928. These testers provide a power source and will allow you to test all of the functions easily by yourself. These testers are expensive though, so if it were me. I would go ahead and put that money towards installing a 7-way on the vehicle so you can test it that way. If you can let me know the year, make and model of your vehicle I can recommend a 7-way kit for you.

Aside from that, another good way to test this is to just find a friend or neighbor with a truck and 7-way and just plug in real quick to test the trailer. There is really no good way to test the trailer with the supplies you listed.

Tha ks for the reply, I've actually already installed a hitch and plug on my tow vehicle since I asked this. I think I'm about 90% complete but I'm having some issues with the 12v circuit on the trailer. I have some suspicions about some of the wiring from the previous owner. Thank you though!
