Looking For Bearing Buddies For A 2005 Shorelander Trailer

Question:

I have a 2005 Shorelandr trailer and I would like to add bearing buddies to my hubs, but I can’t get a consistent dimension using calipers. Can you identify what size I need using the outer bearing size? It’s 1-1/16” Timken L-44649.

Hello Steve, I can definitely point you in the right direction. Regrettably, I am not able to accurately recommend a bearing buddy based on just the # L44649 outer baring size. This outer bearing size is common on several different sizes of hub ranging from 2,000 lb up to 3,500 lb.

That said, there is one size that is much more common than the others, and that is the 1.98" bearing buddies # BB1980A-SS. These are most common on the 3.5K axles, so if you can tell me your axle capacity that should help to narrow things down. The best way to guarantee the right size is to measure the diameter of the grease cab, or the hub pilot hole. Please do take those measurements and drop them in the comments below. I can definitely help make sure you get the correct size.

Thanks for your help Jesse. The axle weight rating is 2090 lbs. and the grease cap is very close to 1.98”, but the hub measures closer to 1.75” or so. This inconsistency (most likely operator error) is why I was reluctant to just purchase the 1980 Bearing Buddies. I’m leaning toward the 1980 option as the most likely to be the right size.

@SteveK Yes if the grease cap measured at 1.98 OD you should be good. The 1980 Stainless # BB1980A-SS are definitely what I recommend. Your trailer is a bit on the older side as far as trailers go, but it SHOULD still use the common standard size. Only one way to find out I suppose. If they do end up not fitting you can always return them and we can get you the next size down.
