Hello Mark. The 2-5/8" center-to-center measurement indicates the 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern. How exactly were you measuring when you came up with the 4-1/4" across? I ask because this contradicts your center-to-center measurement. Also there really is no such thing as a 5 on 4-1/4" bolt pattern for a trailer wheel.
The best way to measure a 5 lug wheel is to measure from the center of one bolt hole to the farthest edge of one of the two farthest holes. This should measure exactly 4-1/2" meaning your wheel is actually a 5 on 4-1/2" which is standard. You can also measure the center-to-center distance of adjacent holes. On a 5 on 4-1/2" wheel this measurement should be 2-5/8" which you have already confirmed. Please do re-measure and confirm this. To me it sounds like you do have a standard 5 on 4-1/2" wheel.
The link below will show you a guide on exactly how to measure a 5 bolt pattern. There are technically 3 different ways you can measure so it probably wouldn't hurt to try all 3. Feel free to comment below if you have further questions.
