Can Dutton-Lainson StrongArm Winch be Hooked to 12V Outlet in Vehicle

Question:

Can I use an Anderson plug to 12v cigarette lighter plug to power this winch? My 4Runner has a 12v plug in the hatch area. If so, what gauge wire should it be? Also, would I be able to find one with the circuit breaker? I purchased this winch recently and really like it, but it’s kind of a pain to hook everything up at the boat ramp. I’d like to be more efficient.

Hey Shaun,

Appreciate the purchase and I definitely understand wanting to be more efficient, but the Dutton-Lainson StrongArm Electric Trailer Winch # TW4015 should not be hooked up to the 12V outlet as the winch needs a direct connection to the battery. This is to protect the electronics and wiring on your vehicle as that outlet is not designed to pull the power a winch needs and could leads to all kinds of chaos.

Ok, go it. That makes sense. Would I be able to replace the ring terminals with alligator clamps to make hook up quicker?

@Shaun Sure, I don't see any issue with that. Should still be able to draw the same power with clamps.
