On the 2005 GMC Sierra there may be some connections that need to be made under the hood to make everything fully functional and allow the brake controller to work. This is a common issue with Chevy and GMC truck owners from 1999 to 2013.
I have included a link to a help article that will show you the connections that need to be made under the hood. It also shows the controller fuse location.
I have also included a picture that shows the functions of the harness (end that plugs into truck). You will also want to check the stop light or CHMSL fuse. When the controller does not work with the brake pedal that is an indication of a blown stop light or CHMSL fuse. Use the owners manual to find the fuse locations. There could be relevant fuses under the hood and in the in-cab fuse panel.
