Can a 2014 Jeep Wrangler be Flat Towed Behind a Motor Home if it has an Atlas Bumper

Question:

Does the Atlas bumper require a tow bar? What other parts are necessary?

From what I could find, there is no where to attach a tow bar on the Atlas bumpers for Jeep Wranglers. A tow bar is needed to flat tow a vehicle. The other options, if permitted, are to use a tow dolly, or put the Jeep on a trailer. Check the owners manual to determine if it can be towed using a dolly. There are very few cases where base plates, needed to attach a tow bar, will work with aftermarket bumpers.

If you want to flat tow the vehicle you are going to need to keep the factory bumper. For the regular Wrangler or for the Unlimited the Blue Ox base plates that fit are # BX1126. With these base plates installed you can use any of the following tow bars:

Adventurer, # BX7322, rated for 5,000 pounds, does not include safety cables
Acclaim, # BX4330, rated for 5,000 pounds, includes safety cables
Alpha, # BX7380, rated for 6,500 pounds, includes safety cables
Allure, # BX7460P, rated for 10,000 pounds, fits a pintle hitch, includes safety cables

Based on the curb weight of the vehicle I would go with one of the tow bars rated OVER 5,000 pounds.

You will also need a lighting solution. I recommend the bulb and socket kit # RM-155. With this kit installed you will not have to cut into the vehicle wiring.

And finally, most states require a supplemental braking system in the vehicle being flat towed. One of the easiest systems to set up and use is the Blue Ox Patriot proportional system, # BLU37TR. It will apply the Jeep brakes in proportion to how much the tow vehicle is braking. This is the safest way to stop and it reduces wear and tear on both vehicles. A 12 volt outlet kit # RM-9332 is recommend as well.

I have included 2 helpful links to our series of articles on flat towing for you.
