Trunk Mount Bike Rack for a 2005 Toyota Matrix with Rear Spoiler

Question:

I have a 2005 Toyota Matrix but it has an overhang addition on the top of the hatch to protect the window from rain. Does this rack fit on the hatch when it has this overhanging ledge?

That overhang we call a spoiler. A lot of hatchbacks and SUVs have them and it can affect fit of items like a trunk mount bike rack. The Thule Passage # TH910XT is listed as a fit for the 2005 Matrix. But with the rear spoiler I do not recommend this rack.

The spoiler piece was not meant to support weight and could get damaged by the rack.

There is a solution though, a special trunk mount rack from Hollywood racks, the Over-the-Top rack # HRF2. This rack has an extra arm piece that moves the top straps up and over the spoiler so no weight is on it. I have linked a video showing how it works.

If you will be carrying any bikes that do not have a top frame bar that goes straight across (like a typical mens bike would) then I recommend using bike adapter bar # 64005. This will allow you to carry those bikes more level and will provide better ground clearance. I have to use these adapters and without them my wifes bike would be at a severe angle and I would not be able to load my sons bike at all. I have linked a video showing how the adapter works.
