Should SUV Tow a Trailer at Max Towing Capacity

Question:

Hello, What percentage of my max tow capacity rating and max hitch weight rating should I stay under when towing with my SUV? ALSO: Should the cargo weight in the tow vehicle be figured into the max tow rating capacity and max hitch weight rating? Thanks

Hey Daniel, great question!

Manufacturers tend to say you can tow all the way up to the max capacity but I usually advise people to remain at least 100 lbs under the max tow rating to keep from overloading your vehicle. Tongue weight is a little different so as long as your loaded tongue weight isn't exceeding what the hitch and vehicle are rated for, and it's within 10-15% the weight of the loaded trailer you'll be in a great spot!

Cargo weight as well as the weight of passengers is factored into all of this as well. Your vehicle owner's manual will have a list of how all of this effects the towing capacity of your tow vehicle.

Let me know if you have any other questions and I'll be happy to help you out!
