Recommended Disc Brake Coating for Twice Yearly Salt Water Exposure

Question:

We dunk our trailer in saltwater twice a year. Obviously the all SS Kodiaks would be the best but would both the E-coat and Dacromat be OK? If yes, which better?

Expert Reply:

From lowest corrosion resistance to highest, the raw steel finish would offer no corrosion resistance whatsoever. E-coat, which is a cross between a painting and a plating process would offer a fair amount of corrosion resistance. Dacromet, which is a water based coating offers pretty good corrosion resistance. Stainless would offer the best.

As long as you spray everything down very well after exposure, the Dacromet coated brakes would be an excellent choice for you, offering good protection without the high cost of the stainless steel.
