Does 2017 Ram 2500 Need a New Brake Controller to Work with Hydrastar EOH Actuator
Question:
I have two trucks I use to pull a trailer. One is a 2017 ram 2500 6.4 gas, with internal factory brake control. Second one is a 1999 Ford F550 with V10 with a Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller. Both trucks are 7 pin hook ups. The trailer has had a Hydrastar Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator for Disc Brakes - 1,600 psi - HBA16 installed. The unit quit working and I called the company and said I need a new one. I want to make sure I get a correct unit that works with both trucks. Dont want to spend the money if I dont need to, but need both trucks to pull same trailer. Question one do I need the Hydrastar Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator Adapter Module Brake Controllers - HBA-CAM? Question two does my Ram Truck need a different brake controller? If so which one?

From what you've described, the Hydrastar Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator for Disc Brakes - 1,600 psi # HBA16 is exactly what you need for a replacement Hydrastar actuator.
The Adapter Module # HBA-CAM shouldn't be needed for the OEM controller in your Ram truck, and unless you're experiencing issues with the brake controller right now, you don't really have a reason to replace it.
If you end up wanting/needing to replace your OEM controller then I recommend picking up the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty # RED24FR and Wiring Adapter # 331-TPH-020. I like this controller because it can be installed virtually anywhere and gives you color-coded cues instead of having to remember what codes mean. You'll also want to reach out to your local Ram dealership to see if you'll need to get the truck electrical system flashed so it will recognize the new controller.
