Recommended 7-Way Connector and Brake Controller for a 2014 Mazda CX-5
Question:
Hello, I have a ‘14 Mazda CX5 and need to install a brake controller. A unit with a factory look would be preferred. I do have a 4 flat currently but want to be able to use a 7 blade AND 4 flat. All the options are confusing to me. Could you spell out exactly what I do need. I appreciate any and all help.

I will be happy to help clear up the confusion. To add a 7-way connector to your 2014 Mazda CX-5 you will need the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller item # ETBC7 you were looking at. The kit includes a pre-wired 7- and 4-way trailer connector that mounts easily at the rear of your Mazda with an included bracket. This kit is designed for use on a vehicle with an existing 4-way flat trailer connector and plugs directly into it.
The best brake controller for your CX-5 is going to be the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Trailer Brake Controller item # RED24FR. This is a proportional brake controller that automatically adjusts your trailer's braking based on the deceleration of your Mazda. The Liberty has a unique installation method where the main unit is concealed behind your dash and the only part visible is the control knob.
You will also need the Universal Wiring Harness for Redarc Tow-Pro Trailer Brake Controllers item # RED69FR to complete the installation. There are no plug and play adapters available because Mazda didn't add a brake controller port to your vehicle.
