Bike Rack Solution to Carry Bikes with Wider Carbon Frames

Question:

I’m considering buying the replacement zip strap for hanging bike rack. My old rubber straps come with a cradle that is too narrow for my new bike. The new carbon bikes have a much wider beam. What is the width of the cradle between the zip strips? Or is there another alternative to fit my new bike on the hanging rack? The width of my new stem is 2 5/8”.

Expert Reply:

The cradle width the zip straps you mentioned is designed to fit is 1-3/4 inches wide so it doesn't look like the # Y63KV would work for you. Since your bike is carbon you really don't want to use a hanging bike rack anyway since they can damage the frame since carbon is a much more fragile material. You will want to use a bike rack that only touches the bike by the tires like the RockyMounts MonoRail part # RKY10004 for a 2 bike or part # RKY10004-10005 for a three bike.
