Troubleshooting No Blue Ring on Curt Echo Brake Controller App for 2013 Toyota Highlander
Question:
We purchased the Curt Echo brake controller in Oct. We are having trouble connecting the device through the app and have been told by two guys at Curt that the app has never worked correctly for us even though we believe the trailer brakes are activated. We originally set-up the app and set a profile. We saw the orange circle, but never the blue ring for braking. Weve followed all of the set-up instructions exactly. The tech who installed the brake controller is really not able to help with the app, thats why weve contacted Curt twice. They say its my phone, I believe its the app. Can you help? Otherwise were going with another option hardwired. We need to have a device we can rely on for safety, etc. We have a 2013 Toyota Highlander.

It looks like there was a change to the app you use to control the Curt Echo Wireless Brake Controller # C51180. In the past there was a blue ring that surrounded the center orange button but now there is a lighter colored orange ring around the orange button (see attached photo).
The Echo is designed to work with Apple OS 14 or higher and Android 9.0 or higher. If you have this then you can try deleting the app from your phone, restarting your phone, then downloading the app and going through the setup process again to see if that fixes anything.
If you're still having problems and you want a physical controller then I recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty and the following parts:
- Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty # RED24FR
- Universal Wiring Harness # RED69FR
- Mounting Panel # 331-TPSI-002
The Tow-Pro Liberty installs out of the way but is still easily accessible since the mounting panel can be placed in the dash area of your Highlander. This system uses colors to indicate what is going on so it's easier to read than codes on a standard controller.
