Can the Pintle Portion of the Pintle Hook Combo part # DPR2000 Be Used on a Standard Ball Coupler

Question:

I work for an organization that is retroactively trying to install Wallace Forge Dual Purpose hitches onto our trucks for towing trailers with couplers that are similar if not identical to the Bulldog Collar-Lok Coupler w/ Low-Profile Latch - 2 Ball - A-Frame - 7,000 lbs. The safety recommendation is to be able to have a pintle hitch for a redundant coupling. Can you tell me more about the feasibility/usability of this dual purpose hitch in the context of our couplers? Do you know how well it work work? Would it make it safer? Thanks!

If you were to use a dual purpose ball mount like the Ball Mount part # C48012 that you referenced you would have the flexibility of being able to hitch up to a trailer that has either a lunete ring or a standard hitch ball that is 2 inches in diameter.

Its an either/or scenario though. If you needed to tow a trailer with a 2 inch ball coupler you could use the ball portion of the # C48012 but you would not be able to also drop the pintle latch on top of the couple for added security.

As long as your trailer was properly connected to the ball mount using either installation method you would be perfectly safe and would not need to worry about the trailer coming uncoupled unless it wasn't in good working order. And in that unlikely event the safety chains from your trailer would serve as a backup.
