First I recommend testing the brown/running light wire on your trailer wiring with a Test Light # PTW2993. You will first test this at the trailer connector to ensure the power is going to the trailer from your vehicle. Some vehicles have this as a separate fuse so if you are not getting power to the trailer connector be sure to check your owners manual.
If you have power at the trailer connector you will then want to check the wiring going into the tail lights. This will help you to determine if you have a short in the wiring or possibly a damaged light bulb/tail light assembly. If your tail light uses bulbs you can remove the lens and visibly inspect the bulb to see if either of the 2 filaments inside are damaged.
