Will Dexter Idler Hub 8-213-5UC1 Fit Spindle With 1.75" Inner & 1.25" Outer Diameter
Question:
I have an old, home made utility trailer 50+ years old that utilized a mobile home axle under leaf springs. The trailer is only 5x10 so never really hauls more than a couple thousand pounds. The brake wires were cut years ago and I dont think have ever worked. I took the wheel and drum off today and would like to replace it with an idler style hub. The inside diameter of the spindle is 1.75inch and the outside diameter is 1.25, total length is 4.5, including 1 inch of threads. Can I replace the old style drum with this: 8-213-5UC1 after Ive removed all the old brake parts of course?

Assuming you measured with a digital caliper, the # 8-213-5UC1 will fit a spindle with a 1.75" inner and 1.25" outer diameter, it is too long for your 4-1/2" spindle, measuring 4-3/4". We don't have a similar hub that will fit, and while it sounds like bad news I'm sure, I think it's probably good because I very strongly recommend a new axle.
Reason why is mobile home axles are designed for a single use and are not designed to be something used on standard trailers. I would swap out the axle asap, and you will just need to know the dimensions of your current axle's hub face to hub face and spring center to spring center; I have added a link below to a video which walks you through how to measure, as well as a link to our selection of axles.
