Is Creaking or Popping Noise Normal for Convert-A-Ball Multi-Cushioned Gooseneck Trailer Coupler

Question:

I ordered this cushioned gooseneck trailer coupler from you in June of 2021. I have noticed after installing it a very loud creak or popping noise coming from the coupler when I brake or accelerate. Specifically if I brake to a stop it will pop loudly when I apply the brakes and then pop again when when I accelerate, as if the cushion portion of the couple is popping back and forth. I checked the frame of the trailer for any issues as well checking the set screws the hold the couple in the trailer for tightness. It has done this since shortly after installing it although not nearly as loud as it has been the last month or so. Im just wondering if something is wrong or if there is any maintenance that needs to be done to this.

The Convert-A-Ball Multi-Cushioned Gooseneck Trailer Coupler # CG itself shouldn't be making any kind of creaking or popping noises when you're breaking and accelerating. The only way something like that would be possible is if the internal components failed and in that case they would be falling out of the bottom portion of the coupler, according to my contact at Convert-A-Ball.

You might get a little creaking from the gooseneck hitch ball connection to the coupler if you go over a speed bump or pothole but the forward and backward motion you described wouldn't produce that kind of noise.

What you might want to look into the the connection from your gooseneck hitch ball to the hitch itself. If you have one that drops in and secures with a pin then that could be a bit worn and would likely be where that noise you hear is coming from. You can also apply some grease # L11316 on the hitch ball to keep the metal on metal friction from making as much noise.
