Can a Supplemental Transmission Cooler be Installed on a 2007 GMC Sierra with Tow Package

Question:

I have a 2007 GMC Sierra 2wd 5.3 V8. that has the tow haul package. Im going to now start towing a travel trailer that weighs 6912 dry weight. I bought an aftermarket trans cooler to be installed but the garage said that it already had one from the factory installed. Since this has a tow haul package is the cooler more heavy duty than one that didnt have the tow haul package? My question is will that be enough for what Im going to start towing or will I need to install the aftermarket one also? Please advise.

Trucks like your 2007 GMC Sierra that have a factory tow package will normally have either an upgraded transmission cooler or one that is external from the radiator and is thus more efficient. If you do not have the type that is external then adding a supplemental cooler is still a good idea.

Transmission fluid cannot be overcooled and keeping the fluid in the optimum operating range of 160 to 200 degrees F will help prolong the transmission life.

The weight of the trailer is as much of a factor as the ambient temperature, the terrain you will be driving through, and the distance you will be traveling. Adding a supplemental cooler certainly would not hurt at all and you can never be too safe.

For your 2007 GMC Sierra the most popular supplemental cooler is # D13503. You will also want fitting # D13035 so you will not have to cut and flare lines.
