On a Reese electric brake controller like the Pilot # 80550 you were looking at, the single red dot should light up when you press the brake or use the manual override function when you do not have a trailer connected. If you have a trailer connected it would also light up with the amount of braking force sent to the trailer when pressing the brake pedal.
