Does The Trailer Tongue Weight Need To Be Deducted From a Vehicles Payload?

Question:

My Chevy 1500 high country 6.2 10 speed automatic has a max payload on the door sticker of 1614# Also a tongue weight of 930# When hitched up to the trailer do I take 1614 minus 930 to get the remaining weight I can put in the truck, passengers and gear together? All other sites I have looked at says tongue weight is part of the payload of the truck Please tell me the truth Thanks so much

Helpful Expert Reply:

You are correct that the trailers tongue weight does need to be subtracted from the vehicles payload weight to ensure you do not exceed the weight capacity for your Chevrolet Silverado 1500. You will want to check the receiver weight capacity as well to determine if you will need a Weight Distribution Hitch # EQ37100ET for your amount of tongue weight.
